If you’re looking for a destination that actually excites tweens and teens (and still feels like a true vacation for the adults), put Portugal’s Azores. especially São Miguel Island, on your radar.

The Azores: Teen-Approved Island Adventure

This is a place where your family can chase waterfalls, hike to epic viewpoints, spot whales in the wild, and still slow down for thermal hot springs and relaxed, scenic evenings. It’s adventurous without being exhausting, and that balance is exactly what makes it so perfect for families. It also has that “we found somewhere really special” feel, which is a huge win for older kids who want a trip that feels different from the usual beach vacation.

São Miguel is often called “the Green Island,” and it’s the kind of landscape that makes everyone look up from their phones… at least for a minute. One of the most iconic stops is the Sete Cidades crater area—massive volcanic lakes in striking shades that feel like a real-life movie backdrop. (Fun fact for your trivia-loving teen: Lagoa das Sete Cidades is often highlighted as one of Portugal’s “7 Wonders.”) Even better, many of the best viewpoints are accessible without long, difficult hikes, so families can enjoy the wow-factor without overloading the day.

For the “I want something COOL” crowd, whale and dolphin watching is a can’t-miss experience. The Azores are known for marine life, and official tourism resources note that more than 20 types of cetaceans can be spotted in the islands. It’s equal parts thrilling and memorable, and it tends to be a highlight for both kids and adults. For tweens and teens especially, it hits that sweet spot of adventure + brag-worthy memories (and amazing videos/photos if they’re into capturing the trip).

If your family likes hands-on adventure, this is also an amazing place to try canyoning—think hiking through lush forest, sliding into natural pools, and moving through waterfalls with a guide. Ribeira dos Caldeirões is a popular area for this kind of excursion, and it’s the sort of story your tween/teen will love telling when they get home. The great thing is that there are often beginner-friendly options available, so you can choose an experience that fits your family’s comfort level and energy.

And then cue the “ahhh” moment, São Miguel is one of those rare places where relaxation feels exciting too. In Furnas, you can soak in the famous Parque Terra Nostra thermal pool, fed by a volcanic spring. The park notes the water can reach about 42°C / 108°F, and it’s an easy win for parents who want spa vibes while still doing something unique as a family. Furnas also has a slower, scenic feel that makes it a great “reset day” after more active adventures.

Another reason I love São Miguel for families is the natural rhythm of the trip. You can plan one “big” activity each day, like whale watching, canyoning, or a scenic crater-lake outing, and still leave room for downtime, a relaxed meal, or a casual evening stroll. That pacing works especially well for families with tweens and teens, because it keeps the trip exciting without pushing everyone to the point of burnout.

What I love most for multigenerational travel is how naturally this destination lets everyone choose their pace. Teens can chase the “big moments” (boats, hikes, adventure activities), while adults and grandparents can enjoy scenic overlooks, gardens, great food, and slower mornings, without anyone feeling like they’re missing out. It’s a “do a lot” destination that still feels calm, which is not always easy to find.
