Walt Disney’s vision of creating parks that are constantly evolving has indeed shaped the dynamic nature of Disney theme parks. At the 2024 D23 Expo, several new rides and attractions were announced for Walt Disney World, promising to bring fresh experiences for guests. Here’s a summary of the most exciting announcements:

Big Changes Are Coming to Walt Disney World

Magic Kingdom

For some time, we’ve known Disney had plans for the area “beyond Big Thunder Mountain,” and now it’s official: a Cars-themed area is coming to Frontierland. This new section will feature two exciting attractions. One is expected to be similar to Radiator Springs Racers from Disney California Adventure Park, offering guests a rally-style race through a desert landscape. The other will be a thrilling adventure, taking guests on a rally race through mountains, covering rugged terrain, climbing trails, and splashing through mudholes. Construction is set to begin in 2025, with the opening date still to be announced.

Another major expansion at Magic Kingdom, which I’m particularly excited about, is the introduction of an all-new Villains Land. This area will bring together all the iconic villains from various Disney films and stories, featuring two major attractions along with themed dining and shopping options. In addition, Magic Kingdom will soon welcome a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed tavern, offering a variety of food and beverages, set to open its doors in 2025.

Lastly, Magic Kingdom will introduce a brand-new nighttime parade in summer 2025. This new spectacle, called Disney Starlight, will continue the tradition of the Main Street Electrical Parade, showcasing characters and stories from beloved films like Peter Pan, Encanto, Frozen, and more. The Blue Fairy from Pinocchio will bring the parade’s magic to life.

Epcot

Over at Epcot, Test Track closed for reimagining in June 2024, and while details were initially scarce, we now know that the all-new Test Track will debut in 2025. This refreshed attraction will continue to be a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Chevrolet. Guests can look forward to six distinct exhibits in the queue that celebrate vehicles, along with new show scenes highlighting technological innovations. The ride will include a thrilling joy ride through scenes with onboard technology and a scenic outdoor route, capturing the excitement of driving.

Additionally, a new lounge inspired by Spaceship Earth is coming to Epcot. While specific details are still under wraps, the lounge is set to open in 2025. It will draw its inspiration from the iconic park landmark, offering a zen space with rich textures and warm metallic tones, creating an atmosphere of elegant, mysterious intimacy.

Hollywood Studios

The big news at Hollywood Studios is the addition of a new land that will fully immerse you in the world of Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.” Set in the city of “Monstropolis,” this new area will feature a roller coaster inspired by the iconic hanging doors from the film. Notably, it will be the first-ever suspended coaster in a Disney theme park. Construction for this exciting new land is set to begin in 2025.

Another exciting update is coming to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run! This beloved attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland Park is about to get even more thrilling. With the upcoming release of The Mandalorian and Grogu film, the ride will introduce a brand-new story centered around Mando and his youngling. This update will be powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine, the same technology used to create the virtual sets for The Mandalorian series. You can expect this new mission to debut in both theme parks following the film’s release in 2026.

Animal Kingdom

We’ve known for some time that DinoLand U.S.A. at Animal Kingdom would be reimagined into a new Tropical Americas land, and now we have more details about this exciting expansion. The transformation will begin in late 2024 and take place in phases, spanning a total of 11 acres. In Tropical Americas, guests will discover a vibrant land with a rich cultural history. One of the highlights will be a large hacienda, home to one of the biggest quick-service restaurants in all of Disney World. Attractions will include a giant working carousel, crafted by a local woodcarver according to the land’s backstory, and two new signature rides: a thrilling Indiana Jones attraction and an Encanto

-themed ride-through experience. The entire land is expected to be completed and open to guests in 2027.

As part of this project, the new Indiana Jones attraction will offer a completely original storyline. Set in an ancient Mayan temple, this ride will use the same vehicles as the current Dinosaur attraction (and the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland Park). The Encanto-themed attraction, which has yet to be named, will take guests into the Madrigal family’s Casita. You’ll explore alongside Antonio as he discovers his special gift and transforms his room into a lush rainforest, encountering various family members along the way.

Lastly, the beloved “It’s Tough To Be A Bug” show inside the Tree of Life will be replaced by a Zootopia-themed experience called Zootopia: Better Together. While the exact closing date for the current show hasn’t been announced, the new show is expected to debut in winter 2025.
