The Hawaiian Islands offer a bounty of natural wonder unmatched anywhere else in the world. These islands have given me so many wonderful memories, that it feels good to be able to give back. Luckily, there are several nonprofit and community organizations and programs that work hard to preserve, protect and restore the amazing natural landscapes and care for its people. Many of these organizations’ offer volunteer opportunities. Dedicating time and effort to a volunteer activity can be a meaningful experience for visitors, connecting them to Hawaii’s land, people and culture, creating lifetime memories, and doing genuine good for our natural world. Here are just some ways you can give back while visiting these beautiful islands.

Maui

Currently, Maui presents abundant volunteer opportunities, particularly following the unfortunate loss of Lahaina town. The community has rallied to aid those in need. In addition to volunteer locations like

Kipuka Olowalu

, which is a nonprofit seeking to preserve Olowalu Valley, a Hawaiian cultural site on Maui’s west side. Visitors also are welcome to contribute at various locations across the island dedicated to supporting individuals affected by Lahaina's wildfires. Kauai

Help keep one of the island’s most popular community beaches clean! Join

Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park

each Saturday for a volunteer beach cleanup day at Morgan’s Pond. Participants contribute to the removal of driftwood, washed-up branches, and marine debris along the shoreline, ensuring the park and beach remain safe and pristine for all. Meet up near the lifeguard tower at Morgan's Pond, where tools, work gloves, coffee, and treats will be provided.

Oahu

Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi Farms

is committed to reestablishing the cultural ties between the land and the community. Volunteers are invited to participate in activities such as weeding, planting, and harvesting, focusing on the restoration of Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi’s taro terraces (lo‘i kalo) and wetlands. During these activities, volunteers have the opportunity to engage in conversations with the farm's dedicated staff, gaining insights into the cultural and environmental significance of the Heʻeia community, which serves as the home for Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi. Island of Hawai‘i

On the east side of the island, the nonprofit

‘Āina Hoʻōla Initiative

provides chances for both residents and visitors to actively participate in the restoration of estuarine wetlands and fishponds in the Keaukaha area. This involves gaining insights into the unique ecosystems of the region and contributing significantly to their ongoing preservation. The fieldwork carried out during the Initiative's volunteer days is dedicated to the restoration, protection, and promotion of the flourishing of native species.
