Where You Stay at Universal Can Change the Whole Trip
Where You Stay at Universal Can Change the Whole Trip
At Universal Orlando, your hotel isn't just where you sleep. It can completely change how your vacation feels. When families start planning a Universal Orlando vacation, it's easy to put most of the attention on park tickets, rides, and how many days to spend at each park. But one of the most important decisions actually happens before you ever enter the parks: where are you going to stay? Your hotel can determine how quickly you get around, how easy it is to take a midday break, which theme park perks you receive, and ultimately how much value you get from your vacation.

One resort I especially love for families who want their hotel to feel like part of the vacation is Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. Inspired by the seaside village of Portofino, Italy, the resort surrounds a picturesque harbor lined with colorful buildings, waterfront restaurants, cobblestone-style streets, and beautiful pools. It feels surprisingly removed from the excitement of the theme parks, yet you're still right in the middle of Universal Orlando. For families who appreciate a more relaxed, upscale resort experience after a busy park day, Portofino Bay offers a wonderful balance.

Location Can Be a Vacation PerkOne of my favorite things about staying at Portofino Bay is how easy it makes getting to Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk. Complimentary water taxis provide a relaxing ride between the resort and CityWalk, putting both parks just steps away once you arrive. Complimentary shuttle transportation is also available throughout the Universal Orlando Resort. That convenience becomes especially valuable when you're traveling with children or grandparents, or when everyone is ready for an afternoon break. Instead of committing to an entire day in the parks, you can return to the resort, enjoy the pool, recharge, and head back out later. The arrival of Epic Universe has made hotel location even more important, but it has also made the decision a little more complicated. Portofino Bay isn't within walking distance of Epic Universe, so guests use Universal's complimentary transportation to reach the new park. Families whose entire vacation revolves around Epic Universe may place a higher value on staying closer to that park. But if you're planning to experience all of Universal Orlando, Portofino Bay's convenient access to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk can make it an excellent home base.

Then There's the Express Pass AdvantageThis is where Portofino Bay can completely change the value equation. Guests staying at Portofino Bay receive Universal Express Unlimited for participating attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, allowing you to bypass the regular lines again and again during your stay. The benefit is available from the day you check in through the day you check out. Depending on your travel dates and family size, purchasing Express Unlimited separately can be a significant expense, so a higher hotel rate doesn't necessarily mean a more expensive vacation overall. There is one important distinction: the complimentary hotel Express Unlimited benefit does not currently extend to Epic Universe. That's why I encourage families to think about where they'll actually spend their park days before deciding whether Portofino Bay is worth the upgrade. A family spending considerable time at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure may find tremendous value in the included Express benefit, while a family concentrating primarily on Epic Universe may come to a different conclusion.

Your Room Matters, TooHotel decisions become even more important when I'm planning for families who need more than a standard room. Portofino Bay offers everything from traditional guest rooms to larger suites and family-friendly configurations, making it particularly interesting for multigenerational vacations. Maybe grandparents would appreciate having their own room nearby, teenagers need a little more space, or younger children need somewhere quiet to sleep while the adults are still awake. Sometimes connecting rooms make the most sense. Sometimes upgrading to a suite is worth the additional expense. The least expensive room isn't always the room that will make the vacation work best.

That's why I don't believe there's one "best" Universal hotel for everyone. For one family, walking directly into Epic Universe from Helios Grand may be the ultimate convenience. Another family may prioritize keeping the hotel budget lower. But for a family planning several days at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, the combination of Portofino Bay's location, water taxi transportation, resort atmosphere, Early Park Admission, and included Express Unlimited can make the higher room rate surprisingly valuable. The best choice comes from looking at the entire vacation, not simply comparing nightly hotel prices. When I help families plan Universal Orlando vacations, this is one of my favorite pieces of the puzzle. I look at who is traveling, which parks matter most, how your family likes to vacation, room configurations, transportation, park perks, and your overall budget before recommending where to stay. Because at Universal Orlando, choosing the right hotel isn't just about finding a place to sleep. It can change the whole trip.
