This week, the next generation of MagicBands for Walt Disney World was released. The new MagicBand+ offers all the same elements as the previous version, with some cool, upgraded technology, including color-changing lights, haptic (motion reactive) vibrations, and gesture recognition which allows them to now interact with your surroundings in different ways.
Here are some frequently asked questions to help you decide if the new MagicBand+ is right for you:
What does MagicBand+ do?
It does all the things regular bands do like:
• Allow Park entry
• Unlock your resort room
• Pay for purchases
• Scan for Photopass photos
• Check-in at Lightning Lanes & Virtual Queues
In addition, MagicBand+ will also interact with things inside the parks to enhance your experience. It also comes with a rechargeable battery.
What does MagicBand+ interact with?
MagicBand+ lights up and vibrates in sync with fireworks, visual effects, and music during nighttime spectaculars like Harmonious, Enchantment fireworks, and the “Beacons of Magic” light-up shows at each of the four park icons.
The Fab 50 gold statues in all the parks that have been added for Walt Disney’s 50th Anniversary will respond to your MagicBand+. You can now play a game, helping Tinker Bell bring the sculptures to life across all four Walt Disney World theme parks using virtual pixie dust. Waving the band at the statues causes them to talk to you.
In Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you’ll be able to play a virtual bounty hunter game, Batuu Bounty Hunters. Vibrations and lights on MagicBand+ will guide you and when you find your Bounty you can use the Play Disney Parks app’s augmented reality thermal viewer to reveal who’s hiding in the shadows. The local guild master will reward you with galactic credits.
How much do they cost?
Prices start at $34.99, with limited edition and special releases costing a bit more. However, if you are an Annual Passholder or are a hotel guest, Disney is offering a discount if purchased 6 days or more before your visit.
How do resort guests add MagicBand+ to their upcoming trip?
The new MagicBand+ will be an option for you to add to your upcoming trip in the My Disney Experience app. Buying them in advance through the app is the only way you’ll be able to get them at a discounted rate.
How do I set up and link my new band?
Disney has a step-by-step process of setting up the new bands here, and each one will be linked to your My Disney Experience app.
How Can I recharge the battery?
MagicBand+ comes with a rechargeable battery and a standard USB-A cord. Battery life will depend on how you’re using it, but Disney says it should last 1-3 days. You’ll be able to check the battery life on your Disney app. But don’t worry if the battery dies while you’re out at the parks. All the standard features, park, and room entry, etc. will continue to work. Only the interactive features will be affected.
Can I have multiple bands linked to me?
Yes, one person can have many bands assigned to them that they use interchangeably. In addition, each band will need to be linked to someone to have things like park entry work. But if you manage several people on your Disney app (like your kids for example) then you’ll be able to manage all of them using just one Disney account. You can also continue to you your older bands interchangeably with the new bands.
Can I change who a Magicband is assigned to?
No. Since it acts as a parking ticket, once you’ve linked a band to a specific person it can’t be changed.
Do I need to use a MagicBand?
MagicBands are optional. You can use your phone or your ticket (pass holder card or park ticket) to scan into anything that a MagicBand would. That being said, MagicBands do offer some hands-free convenience, especially if you have multiple people in your party who need some help finding their cards or need help using their phones. If you use Disney Genie and plan to utilize Lightning Lane access, MagicBands can be especially helpful.
The new MagicBand+ styles are available for purchase online at ShopDisney as well as at Walt Disney World hotels, parks, and Disney Springs. Which one do you think you’ll get?
